Self-Publishing Book Expo 2013 | Is using Archway Publishing what we really need to learn?

The Self-Publishing Book Expo celebrates its 5th anniversary this year with the event taking place on Saturday, November 9th, at the Hotel Pennsylvania, New York City. Founders of SPBE, Diane Mancher and Karen Mender have established the event as one of the highlights for self-published authors and publishing service companies in the USA. Both founders pride themselves with ‘over 50 years of combined publishing experience’ and having ‘a vast knowledge of the industry and a wide network of resources and contacts with traditional publishers, editors, agents, and media.’ Indeed, SPHE has an impressive tag line emblazoned on their website and PR material:

“A learning center for the self-publishing community”

It also prides itself on being an organisation for aspiring authors. SPBE has grown from strength to strength over the last five years, and while I know there are some from the traditional publishing community who know and appreciate the needs and importance of the self-publishing community, I’ve serious concerns why the founders of SPBE decided it would be a great idea to host and promote a prize offering from one of the most questionable and reviled self-publishing companies within the self-publishing community.

Win a Free Publishing Package!!

Archway Publishing will be giving away a free publishing package valued at $1,999 to one lucky winner of the 2013 Self-Publishing Book Expo. Simon & Schuster, a company with nearly ninety years of publishing experience, has teamed up with Author Solutions, the leading self-publishing company worldwide, to create Archway Publishing. With unique resources to support books of all kinds, Archway Publishing offers a specialized approach to help every author reach his or her desired audience.

Simon & Schuster formed Archway Publishing, a self-publishing imprint, and decided to jump into bed with Author Solutions last year in its infinite wisdom. Author Solutions, now part of the Pearson/Penguin publishing group, are at this moment entangled in a potential class action lawsuit in the New York courts under the judicial brinkmanship of Denise Cotes. At the risk of drumming my own drum, piping my own trumpet, David Gaughran and Emily Suess provide their thorough assessment and research of Author Solutions and its place in the self-publishing community here and here.

To continue the musical theme, ‘winning’ a ‘free’ publishing package with Archway Publishing is akin to being nominated to play the last strings of Nearer, My God, to Thee on the Titanic. Quite what the founders and promoters of SPBE were thinking when they made the decision to accept sponsorship from Archway (Simon & Schuster), and agree to carry and promote this offer, utterly astounds me. I can only conclude that an organisation, which supposedly prides itself on guidance and excellence for aspiring authors, either knows less than it should about the community it wishes to represent, or has placed financial sponsorship above knowledge and common sense.

I entirely respect the need for any book event, fair or workshop to seek sponsorship to support its activity, and I’ve no issue with Archway, Author Solutions or any other companies presenting what they have at events. But it is beholden on event organisers to thoroughly understand, screen and present the very best of what a vibrant self-publishing community has to offer, and not just the ones with the biggest influence or heaviest wallets.

All that said, there are many other great companies appearing at SPBE 2013, and you can find a full list of events and seminars throughout the day here.
