Practical Tips for Authors from Publishing Consultant Mick Rooney | Gigaverse Interview

This week, Gigaverse, an online learning resource that teaches people how to earn an income (and eventually make a career) out of their talents, hobbies, and passions, interviewed me on the topic of author-publishing. Gigaverse taps a wide field of information and resources and has already interviewed Catherine Ryan Hyde, Hugh Howey, Erin Brown, Lyn Gardner, Kimberly Kincaid and Jenn Sterling on many issues of interest to self-published authors; from e-books and editing, right through to marketing and entrepreneurship.
I was asked the following questions as part of the interview.

  1. What tactics have you used to promote the self-published books you have authored? Which have ultimately been the most effective?
  2. Under what circumstances should an author pay to self publish a book rather than use a service like Amazon’s CreateSpace to sell print books on demand without shouldering upfront costs?
  3. What are the most common challenges faced by the authors you consult, and how do you help your clients overcome them?
  4. How can one avoid publishing scams as a fledgling author? What methods do you employ as a Services Watchdog for the Alliance of Independent Authors to sniff out abusive practices?
  5. In what ways do you think the self publishing world will change over the next five years?
You can find out what my answers were by heading over to Gigaverse and reading the full interview.
