Book View Cafe Partner With Smashwords

One of the more interesting developments in the world of independent publishing is the rising popularity of what are described as book or writer cooperatives. These are not just random workshop collectives of writers from across the literary and film world, but often comprise of serious and professional writers independently-minded with clear career objectives. Two of the most successful in the world of film are screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie’s 1.3.9, a collective of highly accomplished screenwriters, some from the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, and the John Wells’ Writers Co-op.

Some author cooperatives can be genre specific or simply share a common philosophy or literary style. The most notable and recent author cooperatives I have come across are Backword Books, eXcessica, the Wyatt-MacKenzie Writers Co-op and Year Zero Writers. Another is Book View Café, a digital publishing cooperative for professional authors who today announced a partnership with Smashwords to distribute their ebook catalogue, including titles from well known authors like Ursula K. LeGuin, Vonda N. McIntyre, Sarah Smith, Seanan McGuire and Laura Anne Gilman.

“Smashwords is taking a truly dynamic approach to ebooks. From the beginning, BVC has promised readers the books they want, when they want them. Smashwords’ commitment to delivering multi-format ebooks to a wide variety of major retail outlets and mobile smart phone platforms will help us keep that promise.”

Book View Café Project Manager Sarah Zettel

Smashwords currently publishes and distributes over 6,500 original ebooks from 3,000 independent authors and 100 small independent publishers. Smashwords launched in May 2008, primarily for the benefit of servicing the ebook needs of self-published authors, and in May 2009 expanded its support to publishers. Smashwords has affiliate partnerships with Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Sony, and Kobo.

“We’re pleased to work with Book View Café to help connect their authors with the rapidly expanding audience of ebook readers. Book View authors join a growing roster of professionally published Smashwords authors who are leveraging the power of ebooks to publish and distribute their out-of-print, reverted rights and unpublished works as ebooks.”
