Bestselling Self-Published Author Freethy Partners with Ingram Publishing Services

Bestselling self-published author Barbara Freethy has entered a partnership deal with Ingram Publishing Services (IPS) which will see her novels sold and distributed in print format worldwide to brick and mortar bookstores. Freethy is the author of 40+ contemporary romance novels with sales in excess of 4.8 million. She will self-publish the print titles under Hyde Street Press, her own dedicated imprint for this new venture. The deal is the first of its kind directly with a self-published author by Ingram Publishing Services (IPS).

IPS is a full service, sales and distribution solution for the traditional book trade and should not be confused with IngramSpark or its print and fulfilment division, Lightning Source. Freethy and Ingram announced the news yesterday via a press release. The author intends releasing her bestselling digital titles in print through her imprint Hyde Street Press using IPS, with the first four titles available in Spring 2015. Freethy, posting the news on her website yesterday, said she had been negotiating with IPS for ‘several months’ and described the deal as a ‘history-making and innovative partnership’.

Since I began independently publishing my books, I’ve wanted to reach the large contingent of readers who still like to browse their local bookstores or retail outlets for books, but it was a difficult goal to reach–until now. With Ingram’s help, I’ll be able to reach those readers, wherever they like to shop. […] I think this venture is going to be a win-win-win for booksellers, readers and Indie authors like myself who have not been able to reach the print market outside of print-on-demand in the last few years. There’s been a void in the market, and the larger publishers have been unwilling to put bestselling digital titles by Indie authors into print without taking a piece of the digital pie. But with my partnership with Ingram, I’ll still maintain all of my digital rights. I’m very excited to have Ingram as a partner in this exciting new venture. And I’m so happy that readers will be able to get my books in any format they like from print to digital to audio!~ Barbara Freethy

This isn’t going to be the last of such partnerships for self-published authors and I think it emphasizes that even for mass-selling authors in digital format, print sales in physical stores still remains a critical component to getting a successful self-published author to the next global level. It’s a commercial gateway for the right indie-minded bestselling authors with a huge readership base, and not an option for available to many self-published authors.
Bestselling hybrid author Hugh Howey also welcomed the news yesterday:
Kudos to Ingram for putting this together. This removes one of the last few barriers for self-published authors, and that’s print distribution to brick and mortar stores. For other bestselling self-published authors, it’ll mean another option other than selling off all rights to a work, since publishers have been loathe to sign more print-only deals.~ Hugh Howey
It’s actually not entirely clear who approached who first, and I think we are going to see Ingram take a very proactive role in reaching out to indie authors like Freethy and authors in the traditional world out-of-contract in the future. Ingram’s deal with Freethy is a reflection on the company’s strongly focused strategy on the author-services and small publisher market, but this deal and any future deals will be individual one-off deals. For now, it should not be taken as some immediate indication of Ingram’s intent to expand its offerings for IngramSpark account holders. Privately, I think Ingram were growing increasingly concerned that its POD and fulfilment division, Lightning Source, was not the best structure for the growing amount of accounts set up by individual self-published authors with single titles and a less than perfect understanding of book file production and how publishing works. That requires considerable resources and support and IngramSpark is a better designed publishing platform for small presses and author-publishers with a handful of titles.
